Now In: Decorating An Ocean Room

  Decorating An Ocean Room

Children of all ages love the Tropical Ocean.  If, your child is fascinated with tropical fish, whales, dolphins, colorful seaweed, rock formations, boats and deep ocean divers then create a fabulous Ocean theme for their bedroom or playroom.  The Ocean theme is a colorful and it is great for playrooms because is can accommodate both girls and boys easily.

Walls

First, think of the Walls.  If you are going to paint use a semi-gloss latex paint as this will be easier to clean from your little one’s hand marks.  Most blue colors will work with the Ocean theme, although a deep ocean blue enhances the colors better.

Murals
The Underwater Frieze Frame Mural is ideal because it can be customized to fit any room size or it can do one/two walls or an entire bedroom.  This mural can be done floor to ceiling or 3 feet up from the floor.  Just paint in an ocean blue, place the sand border and then place the appliqués to create your own mural – you and your child can get to design their room. If your child is over 6 years old then they can actively be involved in the decorating process.

For other ocean scenes they come in full wall, chair rail or poster murals these murals come in a fixed picture and are available in different sizes.

Wall Stickers
Under The Sea, Tropical Fish and Aquarium wall stickers are ideal for ocean themed rooms.  Just apply to the walls, a piece of furniture or even glass.  There are many different types of fish.  They are peel and stick; repositionable and reusable which are great for any ocean themed room.

Borders
If you need borders then there are wallpaper borders and peel and stick borders that can transform a room quickly.  Borders can be used on the top of the wall, middle of the wall or three quarters up the wall.  Here is one idea for a border use extra border to decorate boxes or play boxes or cut out the fish and use them to decoupage old picture frame or piece of furniture.

Window Treatments

Window treatments can be simple or complex.  Here are a few ideas:  Make a cornice board to fit the window and cover it with padding and material that matches your décor.  You can use a wave or checkered fabric print and make curtains and valances.  Another idea, it to use bamboo shades or grass skirts to make in more of a beach feel.  Also, look for window rods with decorative sea animals on the ends.

Accessories

To make the Ocean/Tropical room complete is to add accents or finishing touches.  One can add decorative knobs to pieces of furniture, use fish accessories e.g.: light switch covers, tumbler, lotion pump, waste basket etc, use fish art work, or use chalkboard paint and trim it out with a matching ocean border, find a fish print rug or fish themed floor rugs.
One can use a small fishing net from a sporting goods store and secure all four corners to the ceiling and the wall.  One can place fish, starfish and shells inside the net.  Caution, keep the net out of reach of young children.  Also, use seashells, seahorses and large rocks on a shelf.  Children love to explore the ocean.   Place books on small shelves or in baskets so they are accessible for a child.  Use fish themed or coordinating colored beanbags to make it comfortable for your child to read.
